Opeenreel 6

27th November 2006

Next Openreel on Monday 4th December at Cuba, North Hill, Plymouth 6pm-9pm - Free

Openreel had a great day hosting the Motionplymouth film competition at The Arts Centre on Friday 17th November. We screened all the entries from 2pm and then treated the audience to 3 of our favourite openreel films before showing the 10 competition finalists at 7pm. Then it was on to the Theatre Royal for a VIP champagne party and award ceremony, where the short listed 10 waited with baited breath to hear who had won the first Motionplymouth film awards. There was a winner from each category (except Wildlife as there were no entries, disappointingly). These were: Changing Plymouth, Music Video, Mobile Movie and an Open category.

Finalists: (in no particular order)

Tim Coles – The Ringing
David Brooks – The Awakening
Stoke Damerele Community College, Year 9 – The History Lesson
Nick Ward – Denise at Sixteen
Simon Wright – A Place in Time
Derek Dickenson – A Tribute to Jago
Finbar Mallon – The Extra-ordinary light-bulb
Ben Cornish – At Any Time
Kevin Jarvis – Across The Universe
Oli Davis/Tom Fewings – Snowfingers

Congratulations to the Motionplymouth winners:

Changing Plymouth - Ben Cornish – At Any Time
Music Video - Kevin Jarvis – Across the Universe
Mobile Movie - Oli Davis/Tom Fewings – Snowfingers
Open - Nick Ward – Denise at Sixteen

A special mention goes out to Finbar Mallon for his film, The Extra-ordinary light bulb. Although he wasn’t a winner all the judges agreed his film was worthy of a runner –up place which hadn’t been in the original planning. It was a close call but after a long deliberation Nick Ward just pipped him at the post.

I hope this fantastic event has offered some inspiration to local film makers and will encourage you all to make movies – even with your mobile phone! We are already thinking about next year, so, get storyboarding and make a contribution to culture in Plymouth.
